I’m starting to feel that the real threat of a Trump presidency is that it’s lowering everybody’s standards.
It’s made people think well of presidents like George W. Bush, a mass-murdering liar by any measure. It’s made people elevate drone-happy Obama, who casually ordered the murder of more than 4,000 innocent Pakistani’s into almost godlike status amongst democrats and liberals. It’s more recently made people regard Nancy Pelosi as some kind of champion for tearing up his state of the union speech, completely forgetting that this woman is a staunch Zionist who once said, “if this capital crumbles to the ground, the one thing that would remain is our commitment to our aid…I don’t even call it ‘aid’..our cooperation with Israel that’s fundamental to who we are.”
The enemy of your enemy is not your friend. This is a harsh lesson many Egyptians had to learn during the tumultuous events that occurred in the wake of the 25th of January, 2011 – when we tried to remove a dictator and ended up with first a stooge, then a cult, then the military once again. The enemy of your enemy is, more often than not, just his rival. They do not seek to change the system as much as control it for their own benefit.
If you allow Trump to lower your standards to this degree, if you allow him to make heroes of people who you would otherwise view in a far more critical light, then no matter whether he wins or loses the upcoming elections, you will have lost.
