Comic Book Lessons

Things I’ve learned from reading comics:

Time Travel is messy, the good guys always win, sometimes the good guys lose, sometimes winning isn’t quite winning, you can be good and poor, you can be good and rich, you can be bad and poor, you can be bad and rich, the weak can outsmart the powerful, power won’t make you an asshole, if you’re an asshole power will make you a more powerful asshole, cross-overs are rarely worth reading, mini-series are often worth reading, continuity is history, history is gravity, reboots that dispense with history never work well, bringing characters back from the dead is even harder to do well than killing them, there are no lame characters but some writers are lazy, a good writer can make any character great, some writers love stories, some writers love characters, some writers only love themselves, inkers are under-rated, no art style is supreme, bad art isn’t made better by calling it a ‘style’, panel design controls both the flow of time and reader attention, changing artists mid-arc is a bad idea unless the plot explicitly uses the change as a device, event comics are okay when not done too frequently, event comics are always done too frequently, the difference between a hero and a villian is that the former acts despite his fears while the latter is driven by them, you can get up again no matter how broken you think you are, letter pages are a good thing, it’s not easy wining a no-prize, heroes often win because they know they’re fallible, villains often lose because they think they’re not, weakness often gives you sight, strength often makes you blind.

About the author
