God Is One, Religions Are All Good, Repeat After Me….

Alright, right off the bat, let me say this; I do not, for a moment, believe that religion is what is being fought over. At best, misguided morality is at the steering wheel, and at worst, an economic lust and cultural hubris. However, it’s all over the media…Islam, Christianity, Judaism. It’s all over the place. You want to talk religion? Fine, then let’s talk religion. What do I see? The Judaeo-Christian world ‘evaluating‘ Islam on TV. The power players muttering to their people, under their breath, that all religions are one. And then – what do I hear? “You see, the people who are willing to send young boys to their death in the name of Allah, are now hiding out in caves.” Says Mr. Bush. The man whose government had no qualms about sending its’ own young boys to die in Vietnam – in a ‘Police Action’...

Alright, for those not in the know, I live in Egypt. It is currently the month of Ramadan. All over what can be called Arabia, there are, among others, sincere people who are trying to use this time to get closer to the roots of their religion. Family gatherings are more common, and there is, at least, an attempt at piety. Showtime Arabia – or Big Ass Imported TV, has a modified logo – with a ‘Ramadan Karim‘ text attached to it. Showtime are interested in portraying, apparently, an appearance of mutability, and of cultural respect. So… How does that explain that, on Showtime, as I type out these words – at a time of night which in Ramadan approaches that of So7our. The last meal before the day before, the time of the intention of fasting – there are two naked lesbians on my TV screen? I mean, where’s the logic in that? Let’s be...
