Off My Chest…

I spoke to a girl online. She says she’s Israeli. She’s 17. Turns out she went there 11 years ago, from Kazahstan. I ask her what’s she’s doing there, in a strange land, helping fund the killing of a native population. She says it’s her land. She believes, or insists that the Jews are a *race*, that this is their land. That this is her land. I ask her if she doesn’t find it an over-riding coincidence that they speak a language unshared by any of their neighbors, that she does not speak Arabic, that she has come from elsewhere and is killing here. It’s on TV, too. Family coming from Eastern Europe, looking for a better life. Willing to become ‘settlers’ – essentially deciding that they’ll seek a better-life on the front lines of a war. It’s insane. This is not what we’re here for, this cannot be what we are...

God Is One, Religions Are All Good, Repeat After Me….

Alright, right off the bat, let me say this; I do not, for a moment, believe that religion is what is being fought over. At best, misguided morality is at the steering wheel, and at worst, an economic lust and cultural hubris. However, it’s all over the media…Islam, Christianity, Judaism. It’s all over the place. You want to talk religion? Fine, then let’s talk religion. What do I see? The Judaeo-Christian world ‘evaluating‘ Islam on TV. The power players muttering to their people, under their breath, that all religions are one. And then – what do I hear? “You see, the people who are willing to send young boys to their death in the name of Allah, are now hiding out in caves.” Says Mr. Bush. The man whose government had no qualms about sending its’ own young boys to die in Vietnam – in a ‘Police Action’...

Disney’s Trying To Make It’s Way Up My Butt…

I just saw a promo spot on Showtime Arabia. The clip showed three dervishes spinning around, finally morphing into Mickey Mouse’s head and two ears, the Disney Logo. Dervishes, I tell you. Mickey Mouse’s head and ears. ‘Nuff Said.

The Truth About Pigeons!

There’s nothing better than those lil ‘did you know’s, is there? I mean, here I am, watching MTV, and god knows what it’s called, but they have this bit – where they show ‘facts’ while the songs are playing. There’s a name for it. I forget. However, here I am, watching MTV, and…sure, some of the ‘factoids’ make sense. Y’know – stuff like “Arthur Winkler was born in 1982, two inches away from a rhinoceros…” Etc… Sure, I can deal with that. I mean, it has a meaning, perhaps silly, but it’s there. Then I’m confronted with pigeons. I see one ‘factoid’ that makes no sense to me, none at all. MTV tells me that “Placing a mirror next to some pigeons who prefer to lay eggs in company, let’s them do so.” Read that again. Please. The most I can get out...

Cultural Dialogue, My Ass…

Alright, for those not in the know, I live in Egypt. It is currently the month of Ramadan. All over what can be called Arabia, there are, among others, sincere people who are trying to use this time to get closer to the roots of their religion. Family gatherings are more common, and there is, at least, an attempt at piety. Showtime Arabia – or Big Ass Imported TV, has a modified logo – with a ‘Ramadan Karim‘ text attached to it. Showtime are interested in portraying, apparently, an appearance of mutability, and of cultural respect. So… How does that explain that, on Showtime, as I type out these words – at a time of night which in Ramadan approaches that of So7our. The last meal before the day before, the time of the intention of fasting – there are two naked lesbians on my TV screen? I mean, where’s the logic in that? Let’s be...
