Didn’t Know I Was A Communist…

I just saw the music video (in flash) of Ian Rhett’s song ‘(didn’t know I was) unamerican‘.

And if anything, it just made me sad.

It’s good to know – that there are people out there who are sane, but then again – of course there are. There always are. While all the murder goes on, while all the lies are told, while the rapists are lining up in queue – there are always people who have some idea of what’s going on. So in a sense…that’s nothing new.

Maybe there is no sane way out of this. I don’t know. I do know, however, that when I look at the news, it’s all just wrong. Not just the news, but even the way the media portrays the news. It’s not just stupid, it’s misconceived. A cursory look at the headlines is enough to demonstrate that…

A few examples:

Cheney Says He’s Okay After Leaving Hospital

Reality

Dick Cheney is Just Fine.

In fact, Dick Cheney would be just fine anyway. Cutting oil deals, and sending children off to kill and get killed hardly requires the physical fitness that, say, embroidery requires. So long as you can keep his mouth guzzling, and his hand shaking, he’ll do just fine.

Argh.

“Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children. This is not a way of life at all in any true sense.”

American President Dwight D. Eisenhower (1890 – 1969), from a speech before the American Society of Newspaper Editors, April 16, 1963

Sounds great, eh?

What a life.

You cheapen your argument by presuming the Dutch are “preparing to kill” Arabs, Muslims etc. As the article that you linked points out, 6000 Dutch marched in protest of the violence against Muslims and numbers of government officials have spoken out against the attacks. In addition, a heated debate about tolerance and immigration is now underway in Holland. I am not diminishing the fact the dozens of Mosques have been targeted – but be fair, the majority of Dutch are appalled by the aggression.

I think the issue behind the headline is more interesting. And complex.. Why has Holland failed so miserably at integrating its Muslim population? How will Holland redefine its limits of tolerance? Will the Dutch get sucked into the “war on terror” rhetoric?

Unlike its neighbors France and Germany, Holland allows Muslims to practice their faith and observe their customs everywhere – including state run schools. In addition Holland has funded Islamic religious schools for quite some time. Yet, what seemed so liberal and enlightened at the time has lead to problems. These schools have isolated migrant children from mainstream Dutch life and little has been done to encourage them to learn Dutch. “Ghettoes of discontent” have formed and second and third generation immigrants (like accused killer Mohammed Bouyeri) feel as if they are on the outside of society.

One hopes the Dutch will not take the short sighted and destructive route by calling for a “war on terror” which gives the government carte blanche to trample on civil liberties, imprison whoever stands in the way of “freedom” and tear down Mosques.

I pray I don’t read a headline next year detailing The Patriot Act…..
Only this time, it’s in Dutch.

Does it really matter how many people rally in condemnation of violence against Muslims? Look how many people protested against the war on Iraq. What good did that do? Diddly.

The real threat is the polarisation that is under way in Holland, and the frenzied media feast that followed it. It seems everyone with a pen has an opinion, and it all seems to be ‘oh shit, them damn Muslims aren’t integrating.’ Has anyone bothered to ask the real question? Why is the backlash so severe? Why is there so much resentment towards the West in Islamic cirlces? movie isn’t enough to force people to kill (hell, check Amazon for books outright demanding that all Muslims be slaughtered). Nevermind the extremism – we know that, and it’s everywhere (does Bush ring a bell?). What the ‘West’ fails to understand is its own role in all of this. It seems whenever a community backlashes, the blame is dropped squarely into its own lap – for not integrating, for refusing to become ‘X.’ The Asians in Britain have given Britain a cuisine for God’s sake. If they had ‘integrated,’ they’d be eating marmite and beans.

Both the Arab and Islamic worlds have a long hard road ahead of them, a road that shoulve’ been travelled around 100 years or so ago. Yes, we’re late. BUT, the West seems so eager to dismiss its own responsibility, scrambling to get onto its moral high horse.

Well, it’s now time to get off it because there is no moral superiority to be claimed.

Name-calling is a common tactic among radical Muslims. Expose the activities of global jihadists in the name of universal human rights, and the apologists for jihad terrorism will call you a “bigot” and a “hatemonger”: however empty, it’s an effective charge and shows a canny understanding of the fact that there is nothing worse that one can be called in the public discourse of Western nations.

But this example is way over the top. Verdonk makes a perfectly reasonable statement: “It is up to us all to choose what side we are going to take. Do we, following Theo’s murder begin a process to get revenge? Or do we say ‘we go no further than here’?” And for her pains she is likened to Hitler and accused of trying to whip up hate.

Counseling people not to take revenge is Hitlerian? No, the AEL is in a froth because she mentioned that the killer has dual Dutch and Moroccan nationality. The killer left a note with Qur’an verses on the body, and the killing itself seems to have been perpetrated by Muslims intent on giving van Gogh the traditional Islamic punishment for blasphemy. But it seems that the AEL is already trying to rule any notice of that off limits: if you mention (or, Allah forbid, consider the implications) the fact that it looks as if a Sharia punishment has been administered on the streets of Amsterdam, you must be a Hitler. You must be trying to whip up hate.

And so much of the world has gone mad that it is likely that this will be widely believed. It reminds me of an article I read years ago, in which the author expressed surprise that a leading anti-Communist had attended and enjoyed a performance of Boris Gudonov: didn’t this man obviously hate all things Russian? It reminds me also of the fact that German propagandists smeared non-German anti-Nazis as “anti-German.”

An appeal to common sense: there is nothing hateful in what Verdonk said. Nor is it an act of hatred against Muslims to point out the depredations of jihad ideology, It is a peculiar species of displacement and projection to accuse someone who exposes the hatred of one group of hatred himself: I believe in the equality of rights and dignity of all people, and that is why I oppose the global jihad. And I think that those who make the charge know better in any case: they use the charge as a tool to frighten the credulous and politically correct away from the truth. That is what the AEL, I think, is doing here to Verdonk in holland.

The dutch bent over backwards to give equal rights and religious tolerance to muslims and this is the thanks they get, these totalitarian wankers dont understand tolerance.

look at islam for instance, they live in holland yet want to exercise sharia law, and do so on Gogh going obove the law of there adopted land, because these islamic bigots are right.

Hirsi Ali has denounced the “cruelty and abuse” meted out to many Muslim women living in western societies.

Islam as a Hirsi Ali says is a “backward, 12th- century religion”, a “medieval, misogynist cult incapable of self-criticism and blind to modern science”, Hirsi Ali says orthodox Muslim men routinely indulge in domestic violence against women, as well as incest and child abuse. To make matters worse, she argues, their behaviour is invariably hushed up.

“The Netherlands is a country that worships consensus and peace, but here you have newcomers who are not integrated into this system,” she said last year. “They exploit an open, liberal society to reach illiberal ends. Everyone knows the position of women in Islamic countries is horrendous, but the Dutch like to think it doesn’t happen here. They don’t want to believe Muslim women in the Netherlands are beaten and locked up in their homes, or that girls are murdered for holding hands with a non-Muslim boy.”

The solution, Hirsi Ali argues, is for fundamentalist Islamic books to be banned, Mullahs to be banished and for western societies “not to bend over backwards to accommodate a culture that advocates the degradation of women … but to ensure that the Muslim men who perpetrate such barbarity are brought to justice”.

    and I say Hear hear!

  4. “One hopes the Dutch will not take the short sighted and destructive route by calling for a “war on terror”…”

    lol

    The Dutch?

In case you missed it – the Dutch have already thrown their lot in with the ‘war on terror’ – that’s why they have forces stationed in Iraq.

That’s why they’ve already lost 2 men in Iraq.

    http://icasualties.org/oif/PieCountry.aspx

    And so it goes,

  5. “The dutch bent over backwards to give equal rights and religious tolerance to muslims and this is the thanks they get, these totalitarian wankers dont understand tolerance.”

Okay, that’s just funny. So Van Gogh is so concerned about some supposedly Muslim men abusing their wives – that he forgets about all the problems the Dutch might have and decides to rise to the aid of the suffering, oppressed Muslim women. Er…Right.

If it’s women he was really worried about – why not a documentary about wife beatings and date rape in the United States? Why not look at Dutch problems? Or ‘Western’ problems? Why is Gogh so Kipling? As for tolerance, hell, I don’t know. The Dutch were all super sad about that last guy who got assassinated, and who, for all I remember, was uber-nationalist, and racist. So much for tolerance, oh Europe! Hell, Paris can’t even tolerate head scarfs…work THAT out.

My honest opinon is that they’re both bastards. Gogh, and the idiot who killed him. So there, chew on that.

    To continue:

“look at islam for instance, they live in holland yet want to exercise sharia law, and do so on Gogh going obove the law of there adopted land, because these islamic bigots are right.”

First of all, work on your spelling and grammar. I tend not to take people very seriously when they don’t bother to put some attention into their writing. ‘Islam’ is a religion, not a ‘they’ and doesn’t live anywhere, except supposedly in the hearts of true Muslims.

And surely you mean ‘unless they THINK they’re right.’? Yes? Cause otherwise, I don’t get you at all. Maybe that’s a good thing.

“Hirsi Ali has denounced the “cruelty and abuse” meted out to many Muslim women living in western societies.”

Hirsi, like many others, should be denouncing cruelty and abuse towards all women, Muslim or otherwise. Pretending it’s an ‘islamic’ problem is both false and offensive.

“Islam as a Hirsi Ali says is a “backward, 12th- century religion”, a “medieval, misogynist cult incapable of self-criticism and blind to modern science”, Hirsi Ali says orthodox Muslim men routinely indulge in domestic violence against women, as well as incest and child abuse. To make matters worse, she argues, their behaviour is invariably hushed up.”

Blind to modern science? Okay – you’re blind to reality, pal. The ‘Islamic Culture’ – which you are obviously so ignorant of, has given science not only Algebra, but several other tools.

Also – by saying that ‘Orthodox’ Muslim men routinely abuse their wives, Hirsi is blacklisting an entire culture, and an entire religion. It may well be true that some Muslim men (being a subset of the larger group MEN) do abuse their wives – but that is not how Islam tells them to treat their wives, i.e. – is it not ‘orthodox’.

Incest & Child Abuse? Have you EVER heard of the United States of America? The Kind Dutch have, you feign to convince me, solved all of their local problems, all the problems of Europe and of the West, and are now helping the only remaining oppressed population on the planet battle their oppressors? Gosh, how could I have missed that?

“The Netherlands is a country that worships consensus and peace..”

But who somehow has NO problems sending troops to Iraq, to destroy a cluster-bombed population, after UN Sanctions murdered more than 500,00 of the country’s children. Glory be to the Dutch!

“The solution, Hirsi Ali argues, is for fundamentalist Islamic books to be banned…”

    Alright.

    Sorry, that’s just funny.

    Banning books, eh?

    Well, thank God for Europe.

Gosh, I need an ice cream.

    Grow up.

I am aware that the Dutch are in Iraq. I was actually refering to a potential internal war on terror – against Muslims in Holland. Sorry I didn’t make that clear enough …

Is this the Blog of a 6 year old?

Grow up all of you, try going out and making real friends to have a discussion with, especially this blog owner…

  8. < -- very confused. What’s wrong with 6 year olds? Oh, well.

I love this annonymous posting shit, leaves so much opportunity for right wing bible bashers caught with their pants down. Maybe if Omar was on their side of the fence, on – say – jihadwatch, they’d say they ‘laughed him off stage.’

The arguments against Islam by whatever her name was are a load of dog shit if you ask me. Islam never prescribed abusing women, and the fact that some women are abused is a by product of Arab culture, not Islam. And as Omar said – I think societies where members of clergy are routinely caught for fucking children, and where members of the military are caught for sodomizing prisoners – I think these societies should keep to themselves. Maybe a little self critique is needed? The same self-critique the world is demanding of Islam? If Theo was concerned about Islam, he would have brought on the opinions of immams or Islamic scholars, asked them what they thought of women abuse (I think the children part is a gross generalisation designed to ‘shock and awe’).

Theo was not supporting the plight of women (I don’t know which is worse, beating up women or sticking them up in shop windows like mannequins). Theo was a sensationalist who wanted to make a quick buck, and hated Muslims along the way. That’s fine. A lot people hate Muslims – hell, some Muslims hate Muslims. Does he deserve to be killed? Hell no. He was a waste of everyone’s time, and those mosques destroyed in his name will forever be a burden on the people who killed him. He should’ve been left alone because if there is a God, he’ll sort him out just fine.

As for those asking Omar and his kilt to ‘grow up’ – thank you, we’re trying. We will certainly go out and enjoy your consumer age and forget about everything else. We will allow your media, your blogs, your crap, your dogma to mind fuck us. Jeez!

Oh thank you for that insightful comment. If you don’t see the irony of what I said, then there really is no point in arguing this any further. Go to some bible-thumping right wing, hate spewing blog were you belong. Leave us Allah worshipping ragheads alone.

It is quite obvious that you “rag heads” (used with affection) have cream crackered this guys argument. And it is unfortunate that his only defense is to call you 6 year olds.

The days lately are filled with so much anger, hate and sadness – Fallujah, 4 more years, Europe misunderstanding Islam (and vice versa), Guantanamo …

Last night however, gave me hope. Khaled, the Algerian Rai singer was here in Berlin and the crowd was a rainbow of Turks, Germans, Arabs, French, Americans … you name it. And for one night life was good. We danced, sang, embraced and cheered together. It didn’t matter where you came from; we were all feeling the love of great music with influences from East and West.

You can slam me for being naive but the love is out there.
I think we need to remind ourselves of that.

right sorry oh enlightened one, the first to ever have an opinion on the state of the world we live, great thing you posted it on an obscure corner of the web, i know how hard it is to tear oneself away from our cosy rooms and ergonomically designed flatscreen monitors and do something about the world we live in, instead of whining on a webpage

excuse me oh cool one of correct opinions if I believe all religion archaic, redundant, a residual phenomenon left over from a time in which we could not explain the world we lived in, excuse me if I believe Islam to be one of the most bizarre, backwards religons, misinterpreted by bigots and even worse followed unquestionably by the masses!

i bow down to your superiority

Keep posting on your obscure corner of the net, you are obviously passionate about your clearly correct and enlightened opinions
